Al Capone: St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

Hosted by the American College of Trial Lawyers and MDFAWL, this one-day Trial Bootcamp featured the complete trial of Alphonse “Al” Capone for the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. It guided participants through the “anatomy of a trial” from opening to closing and featured lectures, demonstrators, and panel discussion critiquing the demonstrations.

RumbergerKirk’s Director of Professionalism, Career and Skill Development Paul Lipton spoke about the importance of civility and professionalism and moderated the panel discussion, “What Do Judges Want From Lawyers.” Panel members included Chief Judge Cecilia Altonaga, Judge Darrin Gayles, Judge Roy Altman and Judge Lauren Louis. Key points from their discussion: relationships matter, preparation is the key, and authenticity is critical.

During his discussion on professionalism, Paul stressed that it is the choices we make each day and those consequences that write our stories. He encouraged everyone to focus their story on the heroic and honorable advocate. He also reminded attendees that nonverbal clues communicate your professionalism. “Be aware as you walk into the courtroom, conference room or client meeting. Decisions are made as to who you are before a word is spoken. How you walk, dress, stand, smile, and present yourself matters,” he said.
