Jimmy Walsh Honored with the L. Burton Barnes, III Public Service Award from the Birmingham Bar Association
Public service is part of Jimmy Walsh’s DNA, so it came as no surprise to anyone who knows him that he was honored with the Birmingham Bar Association’s 2023 L. Burton Barnes, III Public Service Award during the association’s annual meeting in December.
He has a life-long history of public service. In 7th grade, Jimmy decided that he would go to West Point and long before he knew he wanted to be a lawyer, he was serving the country in Vietnam. An advocate for individuals and families afflicted by mental illness, Jimmy has been active with both the local affiliate and Alabama state executive board of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and is a past president of the organization.
“Mental illness is really misunderstood throughout our communities. When people who are afflicted have support and the proper care, they can become productive citizens and live normal lives,” said Jimmy. “A huge portion of our population is affected either as family members or are those who suffer from the diseases. It is not a problem that goes away if you only shut your eyes.”
Each year, the Birmingham Bar recognizes one member for his or her exemplary service to the public through participation in charitable, service and community organizations and causes. The recipient’s efforts are demonstrated by dedication and sacrifice of time and effort for the betterment of others, not motivated by personal or professional gain. Such service is not done to obtain personal publicity or individual recognition. Finally, the recipient must demonstrate a strong reputation in the community and must uphold the highest standards of honesty and integrity.
“Throughout his life, Jimmy has served our nation, veterans, community and our profession in many capacities. He is highly regarded in the Alabama Bar for his integrity, commitment to service, and honesty,” said Frank Sheppard, RumbergerKirk managing partner. “We are all so proud of Jimmy for having received this very deserving honor.”
