Busy, Busy Bees

Week 8

This week was full of events and fun. I continued to work on some exciting projects for partners around the office, and I am glad that the work (I think) will thin out a bit in time for the mock trial. That said, balancing responsibilities from law school over the summer, as well as work projects and training through workshops and the mock trial can be a bit of a juggling act. However, I know it will all be worth it in the end. I’ve already learned so much, and the progression of learning and improvement is one of the things that excited me most about the practice of law.

A fun night out in Winter Park before we dive into a week of mock trial preparations!

This week, the summer associates and I had a Direct and Cross Examination Workshop where we practiced direct and cross examinations of a witness. It was condensed, helpful, and a really great experience. I was happy – and even a bit surprised – to receive such positive feedback from partners Suzanne Singer and Scott Sarason. I enjoyed the cross examination especially, because it was fun to experiment with my style. My confidence continues to grow, and it makes me all the more excited to keep taking on new challenges.

On Thursday evening we had an event at Orlando at Pop Stroke, a mini golf location, for all of the Orlando associates. I went from three over par to consistently hovering . . . near par! I even managed to snag a hole in one! It was, of course, blazing hot outside, but it was worth the heat. To our surprise, a healthy horde of bees also made an appearance, but no humans or bees were injured, and we all had a fantastic time.

On Friday, Managing Partner Frank Sheppard and his wife invited Coleman and I to an evening in Winter Park. Partner Chase Hattaway and associate Hannah Klonowski also joined us with their significant others, and I was happy for the chance to invite my (not a lawyer) partner, Max, down from Gainesville to join us. We all met up for cocktails at a cute new bar in downtown Winter Park, and then went to our dinner reservations at Frank’s favorite local Thai place. It was an incredible evening and a wonderful way to close out the week. I appreciated the chance to continue to spend time with everyone and just have a joyful evening. I appreciate that the firm incorporates a healthy mix of firm events and team building/bonding activities and all events are made better when you enjoy the people you are spending the time with. Next week may not be as fun, but it will pay off at the culmination of the mock trial. Thanks for tuning in!
