RumbergerKirk creates an amazing environment to learn and grow as an aspiring lawyer. The firm invests so much time into each summer associate, making this program such a unique and personalized experience. Looking back at the summer, I can’t even describe how much fun I had working with the attorneys at Rumberger, spending time with the other summer associates, and getting to know people across all offices!
Week nine was mock trial preparation week. I worked all week on drafting my opening statement, direct examination, cross examination, and motion for directed verdict to be ready for the mock trial. It was such a great opportunity to try out new things for the first time, and I had so much fun finding my own style.
I am so thankful for Birmingham partners Jimmy Walsh, Scott Williams, Craig Alexander, and Rebecca Beers, Birmingham associates Fred Clarke and Julie Potts, Miami partners Scott Sarason, Mike Holt, and Melissa Softness, and Miami associates Erin Weinstock and Brittney Polo (among others!) for taking so much time to coach my mock trial partner, Ashley, and I throughout week. Their feedback made it possible for us to feel prepared and excited for the mock trial.
On Sunday of Week 10, I travelled to Orlando for the mock trial. We had practice all day on Sunday, where Ashley and I practiced in person after practicing virtually for the past week. This was also a great chance to see the other summer associates again. After practice, we all went out to dinner and then headed to the hotel to get some rest before the big day.
The mock trial was held on Monday and it took place in the Orange County courthouse. I was a bit nervous early in the day, but as soon as I stepped up to give my opening statement, all of my nerves went away. It was so much fun! As the trial continued, I had a great time crafting my direct and cross examinations and my motion. This was such a surreal experience, and such an exciting way to close out the summer. Ashley was a fantastic partner. We worked really well together, and I am so proud of myself and the other summer associates for our preparation and performances.
A huge thank you is in order to Orlando partner Patrick Delaney, who ran the mock trial competition. Patrick made sure that the competition went smoothly, and that we all felt as prepared as we needed to be. I would also like to thank everyone from RumbergerKirk who came to or joined the mock trial competition virtually to watch. It is so amazing how much time everyone invests into this program, and you can definitely tell that everyone at the firm is passionate about building great careers for aspiring attorneys.
After the mock trial, we had a happy hour and dinner to celebrate the end of the competition and the end of a successful summer. My time with RumbergerKirk has been more than I could have ever asked for, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to be with this firm!
